Rusted Memories
“Get up, Qute! Come now, a warrior of the Kodiak’s can’t fall that easy!”

I groan. The warm grass at my back is so comfortable right now; far more comfortable than the prospect of getting struck by my father’s staff. However, if I give up now I’ll never hear the end of it. My eyes blink open, squinting against the bright orb in the clear sky, but I can’t help the grin forming across my lips.

“You got lucky, old man!” I try to sound fierce, but I know the voice of a ten year old is hardly the most intimidating sound in the world. The faint laugh of my mother is heard from the stone-packed abode nearby as she helps the others in my village prepare for the hunt, setting up cages and cleaning pens for the animals that will soon be brought back. Her laughter… it is like a faint melody on the wind, strong enough to be heard against the elements but gentle enough to soothe my soul.

A shadow covers the sun as my father stands over me. By the gods, he has to be the strongest man in the world! No one is as big as my father. His hands could crush boulders; I bet even the magic users from the skies that the elders talk about could not face him in battle!

“Hah! I just might have! But if so, all it takes is for your opponent to get lucky once! Remember to always keep your wits about you, and keep to your honour. When faced with insurmountable odds, you must advance. Always forward, always down, and never left or right.”

His face! It is broad and scarred and covered in the piercings that the elders bestow upon achieving feats of bravery. I heard that he slew a thousand men in one day, beating an entire tribe by himself when he was younger! He denies it, but I think it must have been ten thousand warriors and he’s just being modest.

He twirls the staff in his hand and I grunt as I shift up onto my knees. The faint bruise on my shoulder which knocked me to the ground is forming, but I do not care. His fierce expression shifts and it’s almost as if a different person is there. His mouth splits into a warm smile and I can’t help but feel warmth flow through me. I don’t know why the other children are scared of the neighbouring tribe. Sure, the Dragos have been conquering their neighbours, but we have the strongest warrior in the world here! Why don’t they feel as safe as I do?

“I can’t be losing my precious little lion, can I? Come now, let’s get you up and put some muscle on those scrawny little twigs you call arms!”

Indignation fills me. “I’m not a lion! I’m a fierce eagle! Eagles are prettier, and faster!”

He roars with laughter, a large hand slapping the hard flat plane of his abdomen with the sound of a hammer striking a rock.

“An eagle, is it!? Well an eagle shouldn’t be lying flat on the ground now, should they! Rise to your feet, young eagle and…” He trails off. The smile shifts and his brows furrow as his gaze shifts to the horizon. Drums… the horn? Why is the horn being sounded so early? The hunt isn’t yet to start until the sun begins its journey to the shadow side of the world.

“Walls-! … Man your… Bows! Swords!… Hide the-!” The tribe fills with so much noise and running. My father looks at me; his gentle expression is gone.

“Get up, Qute!”

“Father I… what’s going on? I don’t…”

“GET THE FUCK UP!”

I recoil. A monster stands before me. Icy fear fills my veins as the sun disappears and a grey shroud takes over the world. My father’s face—what was his name? Why can’t I…? It is no longer him. It twists into an ugly scarred visage—thinner and narrower and full of spite and disgust. Gone are my tribe’s tattoos, the piercings he is known for.

“Get the FUCK up, you useless gutter slave! I will not lose my creds because of a worthless bitch!”

My eyes drift down. The warmth of my memory fades. Ah… yes, here I am. I am gripping a rusty piss pot, though it is filled with water. In the slave pens we have to make do.

A thin, weathered face stares back at me. The grey eyes are dead; thin lines and dark shadows are already clear around them. Is that truly the face of a fourteen year old girl? At least… I think that’s how old I am now. How did it come to this? I was meant to soar, an eagle fierce and commanding of the skies… free.

I slowly unclench my hand around the pot. The nails are cracked and broken; blood and dirt are crusted underneath. I cannot remember whose blood it is.

The crowds of the arena scream as a man enters opposite me across the dirty, sandy floor. I look around at the pale baying faces of my people screaming for blood and violence. I feel the old familiar rage taking hold, but always underneath it… despair and a longing for what I can no longer remember. My teeth bare, but I cannot help but think: is this finally the fight that will kill me? I should have died long before, but there is something… something within me that refuses. I don’t know what it is, but it tells me I cannot die. It does not let me die.

Perhaps it shall abandon me today, like all others have.

But it does not matter. Whatever it is, use it and win. Or die. I rise to my feet and wrap my shaking hand around my spear shaft and exit the cage. The sounds of the crowds fill my ears until I cannot think… but through it all I hear something proud and beautiful

An eagle flies high over the arena, exhorting its call. I exhale, no longer lost in the sound. I advance. Always forwards.

Rusted Memories - Awakening

“Is that really her? You’re fucking with me.” An obese Rattataki slave trader barks, his voice thick and wet, as if with an overly large tongue surrounded by too much saliva and filled with scepticism as he watches the combatants walk into the arena.

“I’m telling ya! She hasn’t lost yet. Whenever she looks like she’s going to finally be put down, something just… happens, and something possesses her. Trust me, the odds are against her, but put ya creds on her.” His compatriot, narrow-faced and weasel-eyed, gestures emphatically to the blood-stained dust bowl of an arena.

Amongst the baying and roaring crowd of violence-crazed locals, a cloaked and hooded stranger is oddly silent nearby, the rows of stone benches rising up around them and filled with screaming Rattataki throwing detritus and refuse into the arena as their blood rises; yet the stranger only cocks his head at the conversation beside them before looking back towards the arena and the fight to come.

The girl, Qute Blokk of the now vanquished Kodiak Pride, in question strides into the arena, a dark cast to her eyes. Her ribs show, her nails are cracked, and the tribal tattoos of her family look half-scraped off with sharpened rocks as fresh scabs blister and crack to ooze blue blood around her scalp.

I wonder if I will finally die today, or if the howling wind will drag me back again.

The cage door behind her slams shut, the screech of old hinges piercing the air as rusted flakes drift to the dust to add to the mess behind her. Her eyes widen slightly as the cage opposite her opens up, revealing a huge, older man, his barrel chest studded with old scars and his face a criss-cross of ancient, battle-earned marks and wounds. He stares one hate fuelled eye directly towards her that possesses zero mercy for the young girl opposite him, the other milky and blind. He chews a lip before spitting a wad of blackened excess into the ground, kneeling and rubbing some of the old dust into his hands to coat the calluses.

Qute digs her chipped nails into the palms of her hands as nerves threaten to take over. Her leg trembles as fear leaves an icy trail through her veins.

He’s so big, I’ve never fought someone this huge! What are they thinking, do they just want to get rid of me!

Her frantic and panic-filled eyes dart around the arena, looking back past her cage to where her owner should be seated. Her grey eyes widen as she watches the skinny, pock-marked Rattataki accept a sack of credit chits from another man, his visage triggering a memory of a previous bout.

That man, he… he owned my last opponent. The bastard is selling my life!

She screams towards the stands, her thin voice barely heard over the crowd.

“WHY!? Why are you doing this?! I was making you creds!”

Her voice trails away as the only responses she gets are an apathetic shrug from her owner as he gestures to the large sack of credits, apparently worth more than her flesh. The man buying her death just smiles at her and licks his lips, causing the girl to scrunch her eyes shut before turning slowly back around to face her foe.

The wind appears to howl louder. Dust picks up and swirls around the combatants as the crowd turns into slathering and ravenous demons at the prospect of seeing the slave girl torn apart. A threadbare, blood-stained rag loosely attached to a stick is waved, and the battle commences.

Qute rushes in, trying to ignore the fear slithering through her limbs like eels coiling around her muscles and slowing them down. Muck-tainted dust kicks up around her bare feet as she barrels towards the man, her legs bending as she prepares to kick in either direction as a fist coils and her teeth bare in a fierce snarl whilst the barrel-chested man widens his stance.

Have to get in close! He’s old, slow. Bend low and smash him right in the fucki-

Her world turns upside down suddenly. Her fist, flashing directly between the man's legs, suddenly disappears inside his own monstrous hand. Dead and tired eyes suddenly widen and fill with life and fear as a scream rips across the arena alongside the faint sound of knucklebones being crushed.

This isn’t fair! He shouldn’t be this fast! OH FUCK IT HURTS! WHERE ARE YOU?!

An audible gasp is heard as Qute is bodily lifted via her crushed hand and slammed down onto her back on the ground. Her scream is cut off midway as all the oxygen in her body is forcibly and painfully driven from her lungs. Darkness blackens the corners of her eyes as her chest heaves, almost suffocating from the force of the blow as she tries to get her body to work.

She searches for the inner strength, the shadowy force that always seems to come to her in these moments, but her mind draws a blank. The only thing that crosses her thoughts is how much this is going to hurt as he lifts her broken body and, with a roar, sends her flying and tumbling across the arena ground as she rolls to a pained and crumpled stop.

“Nh- Ah…!” she gasps and heaves for breath as she tries to crawl to her knees, a scream tearing across the arena again as she accidentally puts her shattered hand on the ground to try and lift herself up. Qute’s head tilts as the demon slowly walks towards her, fear filling her body and destroying any plans of survival she may come up with.

Her father appears before her, wearing the hunter's garb of the day he died as he roars, “Stand, Qute! Don’t let this be it, you have to be tricky. Remember what I-” The mirage is cast into the wind as the old, evil demon walks through it, and the kindly stern face is replaced with a twisted grimace of cruelty.

“I can’t! No, no! Please!” she backpedals across the ground as he approaches, kicking desperately away as she comes to her feet. “Where are you!? Why have you left me?!” A flicker of confusion crosses the demon's face before he shrugs and rushes at her, great pawing claws tearing at her slave robes.

The girl screams like an animal, all instinct and terror, as she lashes out. Her feet kick into his face, her shattered hand punches out, causing the knuckles to break through her flesh as the bones turn jagged, and yet the cruel grimace only turns into a darker grin as he sees the fear filling her face. A fist slams into her stomach, driving all the oxygen again from her body as spit and saliva dribble from her mouth, a final gasp of, “N-no! Plea- Where- Guh- Help m-!”

Her pleas cut off as he mounts her fully and wraps his hands around her throat, her legs kicking out and spasming beneath him in desperation as her eyes widen and display all their terror-filled whites. Her fist, as yet uncrushed, slams repeatedly into the side of his face, his ribs, her knee lifting to kick him in the groin, but it all leaves him unfazed.

HELP ME! I CAN’T- I CAN’T DIE HERE! WHERE ARE YOU!

Screams of desperation fill her mind. Her nails scrape down the demon's face as flesh curls and rips apart under her nails, but the only thing it causes is the further crushing of her throat as the bones and tendons start to grind. A sick, choking sound emits from her lips as she thrashes.

A sense. That old dark thing, that sickening yet beautiful presence. She can feel it. But it’s… watching. It won’t help!

Come here! You fucker! Help me!

Why does it appear to be mocking her? It dances just out of reach. It acts capricious, but she can feel the raw power and fury behind it all. It hates her. It is now here to watch her die after the faintest taste of hope. Some of her terror is replaced by fury. The true battle is now here. This demon is no demon; he is a slave like herself and worthless in the face of this! The true fight is battling this Force, this elemental aura that must bow!

OBEY! YOU WILL SERVE ME! I AM NOT YOUR SLAVE HERE!

Qute’s mind latches onto the dark Force filling her, her body and soul searing from the mere touch of this chaotic aura of fury and passion. It fights her, trying to resist her touch, but with an internal scream that rips out into the physical world through clenched teeth, she drives it down and submits it to her will. It took only seconds, but it felt like the most gruelling battle of her life as, whilst her vision starts to dim to suffocating unconsciousness, her arm fills with strength! Beautiful, furious, and passion-filled strength! Far more than the little tastes it had teasingly granted her before to drag her hope out!

Her fingers straighten into a dagger, and with the last spark of her life she jams it up into the slave's throat. Her nails pierce through his thick neck, cutting through the jugular as almost her entire hand wetly disappears into his neck, and he stiffens. His grip around her neck slackens, and the arena just falls silent, the baying jackals of the crowd stunned as the only sound is now a gasping, torn scream of defiance from the young girl now covered in blue blood before she finally succumbs to unconsciousness.

The only movement in the stands is from the cloaked and shadowy figure. His head tilts as the gleam of corrupted yellow eyes appears above a growing smirk. He stands, a hand shifting beneath the robes as he walks down the stairs towards the arena as the unconscious girl doesn't realise her life is about to change forever.
