The Husband
His hand slammed into the black metal table, the plates on it clattered loudly before
being overshadowed by the shatter of a glass hitting the floor.
“It was better before! Damn them!”
His wife of 22 years had already gone to the kitchen to get something to clean the broken
glass with, he loved her with all his heart, but she just couldn’t see how things had gone
for the worse after -they- took over.
The man looked at his old, wrinkled hands, filled with callouses that he had gotten to
help build this city. But his supervisor had to go and die during the bombardments
during the rebellion and someone more competent took over, so he never got the
promotion.
His deep blue eyes looked up to the holos hanging on the black wall, showing a collage of a
young man with short blonde hair and a bright smile.
You had to join the rebellion didn’t you? Wanting to show you cared and knew better?
Maybe you were right...
He didn’t have much time to think further about it before there was a loud knock on the
door, no one ever came around at that time.
“I’ll get it. I’ll help clean up the glass after.”
The metal chair screeched against the floor as he pushed it back, standing up with a bit
of effort, it wasn’t as easy as it used to be.
He opened the old door and was met by something he didn’t see often, a Chiss with a
weird scar along the left side of his face.
“Jarkan Harl? Please come outside, we need to talk.”
Such a cold voice, matched the icy red eyes was all the old man could think. Every fibre
of his being told him to not do it, something was wrong. But looking over his shoulder to
his wife now cleaning the floor he stepped out and closed the door, the only answer
given was an affirmative nod.
Only now did he notice the Chiss was wearing full combat gear, and a blaster rifle
hanging from his back, this only made him happier he agreed to step outside.
He followed the armoured figure down the hallway before they both stopped, the knot in
his chest didn’t go away.
“I heard you were saying that the rebellion was not a bad thing. That it was better before
and should go back to then. Normally I would not care, but it appears several people
have now told me. So now I am here to tell you to stop, you are making many here
nervous.”
The fear only grew as the Chiss standing in front of him spoke, his own neighbours and
friends had ratted him out? And now this child tells him what to do?
He gave his leg, his life... his son to Preya, what would he know? The rage took over and
overflowed.
“I’m entitled to my opinion, it doesn’t put anyone in danger that I-“
His mind didn’t even register what happened, only the pain in his back as his body was
suddenly slammed into the wall behind him, his breathing stopped as the arm of the
Chiss pushed against his throat.
“You saying it does not put anyone in danger shows your stupidity, I will give you a
chance to promise me you will stop. If I hear from another person that you continued, I
will kill you for putting this place and her in possible danger. Understood?”
To be continued...
